The Major Crisis Relief Fund Announces $50,000 in New Grants

HYANNIS, MA (January 20, 2017) – The Cape Cod and Islands Major Crisis Relief Fund (MCRF) has received two grants totaling $50,000.

The Cape Cod 5 Foundation announced a $30,000 grant to be paid over two years. “The grant will be used to provide humanitarian aid to local individuals and families when a disaster strikes,” says Dorothy Savarese, Chairman for the Cape Cod 5 Foundation.

Additionally, the Edward Bangs Kelley and Eliza Kelley Foundation, Inc. has awarded a $20,000 grant. “The decision was made in light of the organization’s much-needed contribution to the community,” says Joel Crowell, President of the Edward Bangs Kelley and Eliza Kelley Foundation, Inc.

“These grants will go a long way in assisting the MCRF as it prepares to assist others in response to major crises and they are particularly timely as we brace for winter blizzards,” comments MCRF Managing Director, Judy Walden Scarafile. MCRF aims to fill existing gaps in preparing for and responding to major crises, particularly in terms of long-term recovery assistance. MCRF was established by the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

“The MCRF will address critical, long-term needs that are unmet by traditional forms of private and public disaster aid,” says Richard Weir, MCRF’s Director of Fundraising. “MCRF ‘s ability to fill existing gaps in preparing for and responding to natural disasters such as hurricanes and blizzards, and man-made crises such as epidemics and terrorism, is essential to our community’s quality of life.”

MCRF was launched in August, announcing a goal of raising $1 million, and it has surpassed $200,000 in donations.

In addition to its fundraising, MCRF is focusing on public education to make residents, visitors and first responders aware of the Fund. The MCRF Leadership Team will be participating in various speaking engagements and local media programs. Those interested in having the MCRF present at a meeting or luncheon should contact Judy Walden Scarafile at 508-362-4467 or at JudyScarafile@gmail.com.
